I have spent the last few days looking at images that were created by a technique called “camera tossing.” In a nutshell, you find a light source in a dark area, set a somewhat long exposure and toss your camera in the air while pointing at the light. You can add swirls by spinning the camera when you toss it as well as other effects, your only limitation is your creativity, some luck and how willing you are to throw an expensive camera in the air.
For the most part, I am not that willing to throw my cameras in the air, so I have been finding ways to work around that little requirement. I started by slinging my D200 around on it’s camera strap, but found that the camera was pretty big and bulky. I then started playing with the Panasonic LX3. I have done things like attaching it to a camera strap, but have found so far that attaching it to a mono-pod and moving the mono-pod around gives pretty decent results.
This image was created with my LX3 attached to my mono-pod and pointed at my Christmas tree. I am sure that once all the abundant Christmas lights are gone, this little photographic fad of mine will fade away, but in the meantime I am having a lot of fun with it.
