Structure is complete

The structural portion of the deck build project is now complete

Happy to report that my Labor Day Weekend was actually a productive one, which included some labor.  The deck structure is now complete and I am ready for the decking itself.

Unfortunately there will be a short delay on that, in addition to making the final decision on what we will be doing for the decking, I have a work coming up next week which will delay me from finishing this project.

Taking Shape

The back deck is finally starting to take shape

The new deck is starting to take shape, thanks to a few hours of work each night after work this week.  You can finally start to tell what it is going to look like when done, and get a good feel for the size.  It really is taking shape.

When done it will be 20′ by 14′ and even though the perspective of the wide angle lens I shot this picture with makes it look like the left side is much larger than the right, they are both 10′ sections.

I did learn a very valuable lesson though, a simple bubble level can actually be wrong.  I had laid out the three beams last night and when I was finished the middle beam was 3″ higher at the end than the other two.  I can honestly say that I was baffled as I had paid close attention to my level.  What I did find out was that if I checked the same board twice with the level I was using, it would give me two different readings.  After a hurried trip into Home Depot and purchasing a new level, things were back on track.

Next steps are to hang the joists.  Not sure if I will get this done soon or not, with the 3 day weekend right around the corner it looks like I might not have a lot of free time.

Deck Build Joist Start

Started back on my long delayed deck build project again today.

Hard to believe that the last update I posted for my deck build project was back in October of last year.  I wish I could post that even though I hadn’t been posting about it, the deck was finished and we were simply to busy enjoying outdoor cooking and cocktails on the new deck to post about it, but sadly that isn’t the case.

It isn’t like I haven’t been doing things though, but working on the deck hasn’t been part of what I have been up to.

Work on the deck sort of came to an end last fall when the weather started getting bad.  I didn’t think much about it through the winter and when spring rolled around we got busy doing other projects around the property, we took a family vacation to Yellowstone and the deck simply took a back seat to many other things.

The good news is that thanks to the delay I have re-designed the deck some, I think for the better, and will be building in some covered storage for the smokers and grills at the same time.  You can see from the image above that the back wall of that storage will be the old fence posts that I had intended to cut off.

I probably won’t be moving really fast with this, but hopefully it will be steady progress as time and budget allow.

I don’t know how many of my followers will remember the early 90’s tv show Northern Exposure. The premise of the show was that the town on Cicely, Alaska had paid for the education of Dr. Joel Fleischman, and as soon as Dr. Fleishchman graduated from medical school he moved to Cicely to pay off his education by serving as the towns doctor.

The show ran for 5 years, and many may or may not know is that the town of Cicely, Alaska is actually Roslyn, Washington.  Over the run of the show almost all exterior shots for the show were done in Roslyn.  Roslyn is actually an old mining town, and to this day benefits from the tourism that a direct result of Northern Exposure.

Even though I was a big fan of the show, and watched it regularly while it was in first run, I have to confess that in addition to the story, it was the fact that a tv show had scenes from somewhere I had actually been, for someone that grew up in a small town in Northern Idaho, that was a pretty big deal.

Before last weekend I hadn’t been back to Roslyn in many years, but the Olympia Camera Club took a field trip to that general area and it was fun to spend an hour or so wandering around the streets of Cicely, Alaska. 🙂

Burning Brush Pile

One of three brush piles on fire

It’s hard to believe that my last blog post here was all the way back in October, we were firmly in fall and looking forward to winter. Apparently I just skipped winter, at least from a personal blogging standpoint, and skipped all the way to spring.  I never considered blogging as one of my spring chores, but apparently it is. 🙂

In addition to making a blog post to celebrate spring, one of my real spring chores is to prune trees, clean brush, pile that brush and then burn it.  We have 2 acres with a lot of trees, needless to say that there is a lot of brush to cut, pile and then burn.

We bought our property in the spring of 2012.  Prior to us owning it the property was allowed to get very over-grown and we have been working every year to clean it up and turn the entire 2 acres into a park like setting.  For the first time since we have moved in we are really starting to see the benefits of all that work.

Pruned Fir Tree

Fir tree that was planted as part of a Christmas tree farm

The biggest difference this year is that we are finally getting to pruning the trees.  I blogged here a couple years ago about our property having been planted as a Christmas tree farm.  Those trees haven’t been touched in years.  One of our goals since moving in was to clean them up enough that we could walk around and under the trees.  In the past I had used a traditional chain saw for the tree pruning but it was a literal pain in the back when trying to prune the lower branches and all but impossible to reach the higher up ones.  Possibly the best investment ever was a rechargeable pole saw, it really has helped us tame our property.

I have every intention to post here again before two more seasons pass by.  🙂

Storms Damage

The damage casused when a deer jumped in front of Storm, my 2011 Toyota Tacoma

It might seem odd to get emotionally attached to an automobile, but in truth, I have done so with pretty much every one I have ever owned.  Some have been with love, and one specific one, which I won’t go into here, was actually a relationship of hate. 🙂  Storm, my 2011 Toyota Tacoma, which was named Storm by a reader of my blog at the time, is one of the ones that it has been a loving relationship.

She has just over 100,000 miles on her, and for those that know Toyota 4×4 vehicles, that means that she is just now getting “broken in” so to speak.  Sadly, a deer decided to jump in front of her on Tuesday morning, less than a quarter of a mile from our house, and while the damage was not very severe, it was more than enough to mess up the front passenger side, as you can see in the above picture.

She has been at the body shop since Tuesday afternoon, and will stay there until at least Monday afternoon.  I can’t wait for her to get home, even though I have a rental, I miss her 🙂

The Posts Are Set

The final posts have been set for my deck build project

Actually, the final deck posts were set almost 2 weeks ago.  Thanks to a week long work trip to Arizona I was a little late on getting this post out.

I still have a little work to do on the garage siding after I found the damage earlier, but things are moving along.  The next step will be setting 12 2x6x12 pressure treated boards that the deck joists will in turn hang from.  Ironically enough, my biggest challenge right now is how to get those 12 2x6x12 boards home, my Toyota Tacoma only has a 5′ bed. 🙂

Damaged siding along the back of my garage.

Damaged siding along the back of my garage.

I have done enough DIY projects, as well as watching enough HGTV to know that every project will have a setback or two along the way, and my deck build project is no exception.

As I was setting the posts along the back wall of my garage, you can see the first one in the foreground of this image, I discovered that the siding has been damaged over the years.  The damage came from what I suspect was years of water hitting the ground and then bouncing up on the siding.

The good news is which it is damaged, it isn’t it terrible shape and I will be able to simply repair it, but I will need to take care of that before I build all the joists for the deck.  In the meantime, I will have the final posts set tomorrow and will then take care of the siding.

Site prep for the new back deck

Site prep for the new back deck

I have a list of projects that I have been wanting to tackle since we bought our property back in the spring of 2012.  Some I have done, many I have not, and there really is no excuse as to why I have put some of them off.  Building a deck off of the back of my garage, in the back yard, is a perfect example.

Ok, I am not a good carpenter, in fact I sort of suck at it, but after a lot of research I am 95% sure that I can actually build this thing myself.  Seriously, how hard can building a deck actually be?

Let me start by telling you a little about the deck I am going to build.  The whole purpose for the deck is to serve as something of an outdoor kitchen and a place for some outdoor furniture for us to enjoy our back yard.  It is going to be 20’x14′ and will also have a small covered enclosure for storing the grill and smokers.  You can see the overall layout in the picture above, and before you ask, no, it will not be going all the way to the ends of the garage.  If it did, there wouldn’t be enough room between it and the house, this picture is sort of misleading.  There will be a new sidewalk that runs from our back door to the deck though.

The deck will be “free floating” meaning that it will not be attached to the garage.  There are a couple reasons for that, but the biggest is that I am re-using the already existing posts for the fence section that you can see in the picture.  They are already in place, exactly where I want them and they are very solid.  That fence use to go around our back yard and block our back yard from our back-back yard.  I have removed most of the fencing and turned it into a really big back yard. 🙂  The upside to that earlier project is that I have the old fence 4×4 posts to re-use in the new deck.

That’s it for now.  More posts coming soon as the deck project progresses.
