Storm Clouds

Storm Clouds south of the metro Phoenix area.(please click on the image to see a larger version or to order prints)

I found myself having to drive out to Yuma for work recently.  There really is no nice way to say it, but the drive to Yuma can be pretty brutal.  There isn’t anything scenic to see along the way, but fortunately I had some pretty storm clouds to look at.

Labor Day in Gila Bend

Labor Day this year was a pretty good day for storms in the south western portion of Arizona.  Sadly it wasn’t all that great of a day for my shooting them.  While I did get some lightning images, there was nothing that I was particularly happy with.  The up side of the day was that there were some great looking skies in the late afternoon.

Out in the field

While the monsoon has taken a little break in the Phoenix area, the storms have been building up south of us.  Sadly they haven’t made their way this far north, and with my day job I haven’t been able to travel as far south as I would like to each night.  Fortunately we still get some pretty cloud structure to look at.  I actually caught this one as it was sort of falling apart, it looked even better about 15 minutes before I captured this, but I wasn’t in position yet.  This was the first image I made tonight.

The thing that I really like about this image is that by simply glancing at it, you would never really know that it was shot in the Arizona desert.

As always, please click on the image to see a larger version, and any blog comments are always appreciated.

Where Are The Monsoons?

It is turning out to be a very disappointing monsoon season. We have had a couple storms, but most of them seem to be missing us either to the south or the north. Yesterday looked like it was promising, but it wasn’t meant to be.

I have been itching to take some lightning photographs but it just hasn’t happened yet. I tried last night, but the storm was too far to the south, right on the Mexican border, and as I traveled south to catch it, it kept moving south itself. I guess it just didn’t want it’s picture taken. :-(

This shot was one of the few I captured last night. The light is from lightning, but very distant lightning.
