7th Street and I-10

This image was taken from the same place as the sunset image I posted yesterday.  One of my goals for the evening was to get light trails on the freeway and the overpass.  There are two very nice sweeping turns as can be seen in this image.  One thing I wasn’t really expecting was that the traffic on a Saturday evening was going to be so light.  I actually had to blend 3 images together to come up with this shot.

I plan to return on a week night when hopefully there will be a lot more cars on the road.

Over the 51

I have always been a sucker for taking long exposure images of traffic.  I love the long flowing lines of the headlight and taillights.  I was really excited when I moved to the Phoenix area last year because I thought that there would be hundreds of places to find a high point on an overpass to shoot from.  So far, I have had very little luck finding any that offer an un-obstructed view of the road below.

I took this shot on Thanksgiving night over the 51 freeway in central Phoenix.  I had my camera on my tripod and actually hung the whole setup by the lens over the top of the fence.  There was never a fear of my gear falling to the freeway below, but needless to say, the setup was very unstable and of the 10 or 12 exposures I made, this was the only one that I had anything to work with.

I will keep searching.

Nighttime HDR

It took me a long time to want to start doing any HDR photography.  It wasn’t because I didn’t understand it, or what it could do, but I had seen so many examples of HDR that I hated.  They all looked like over the top cartoon images.  Some like that, I never did, but it was enough to keep my photographic interests elsewhere.

Sitting all of that aside, I have just started to develop an interest in HDR, and have been happy with some of my early results.  I still have a VERY long ways to go, and last night I discovered that night time HDR can be a real challenge, but it is fun learning something new.

This image was take at SkySong in Scottsdale.  It is 3 images, 2 stops apart, tone mapped with Photomatix Pro.

SkySong in Scottsdale

Spent an enjoyable evening out shooting with my wife tonight.  I haven’t really done anything other than snapshots of my landcruiser in a few weeks, so I really needed to flex my creative muscles a little.  This shot, and some of the others in my gallery, were taken at SkySong in Scottsdale tonight.  I hope you enjoy them.
