Inception

A reflection of windows in downtown PhoenixPlease click on the image to see a larger version or to order prints

During our recent downtown Phoenix photowalk we came across a building that has these amazing curved windows.  My friend Chris Frailey included a shot of the building in his recent blog post about the walk, you can see that post here. The building really does seem “out of time” but what really caught my attention was the reflection of the building in the glass windows of the building across the street, as well as the effect that the alternating colors of glass had on the overall scene.  I decided to turn around and shoot if from that perspective which also goes hand in hand with my goal of shooting more abstracts in 2012.  I hope you enjoy the results.

I have to confess though, I took inspiration from my buddy Mike Olbinski when it came to a title for this post, he has a great series of movie title images, and I thought that Inception would work well for this slightly distorted perspective.

The “failed” monsoon photowalk

I wanted to take a second to thank everyone who made it out last night to what we hoped would be an evening of storm chasing and weather photography.  Sadly the storms didn’t cooperate, but that is the “nature” of weather photography.  We did get to see some lightning on the horizon, the star of the evening was the sunset.

Even though we didn’t get the images we were hoping for, I had a great time.  I always enjoy meeting new people, and we had I had a lot of fun chatting with everyone all evening.  I look forward to the next time we can get out and do some shooting together.

Monsoon “Photowalk”

It looks like the monsoon is right around the corner.  This means that it is time to get out and start getting weather images.  This is what I live for photographically and I really would like to share the experience.  I have decided to put together an informal little “photowalk” with the sole purpose of photographing weather and my good friend Mike Olbinski has agreed to help out.  Even though this is a very informal event and not an educational workshop, Mike and I will both be more than happy to share our experience when it comes to weather shooting.

My plan is to meet in the late afternoon and see if we can get some shots of cloud structures and such.  This will also let us decide how to approach the night for lightning.  Keep in mind though, lightning photography can be really HIT or MISS and no one can promise that we will even see anything.  I am not promising lightning. :-)

My initial thoughts are to shoot for 5:00pm on July 23rd.  We will meet in Chandler at the Paseo Vista Recreation area.  The address is 3850 S. McQueen.  I really like this place as it has some elevation and you can get a good feel for the storms from there.  It also provides fairly easy access to the highways in the area.

Transportation is going to be up to each person.  We will meet up, do some shooting and depending on the weather, find somewhere for refreshments and story telling afterwards.

If you would like to join us, please fill this form out.  I will keep everyone who is planning on attending updated via email as well as here on the blog.

Photowalk at Tempe Town Lake

Before starting what is looking to be a very busy Saturday, I wanted to take a second or two to thank my bud Mike Olbinski for organizing a small photowalk at Tempe Town Lake last night.  While this group might not have been as big as the group for the recent downtown Phoenix walk, it was still a great group and it was nice meeting some new people as well as seeing some from previous outings.

PhotoWalking

My friend Chris Nitz has been tweeting today that he is thinking of adding a Lensbaby to his bag.  This motivated me to go and grab another of my shots from the recent downtown Phoenix photowalk.

I am a huge fan of the Lensbaby system.  I have the Composer lens with the wide angle, super wide angle, telephoto and macro adapters.  The joy of shooting with this system is that it really does force you to “see in a new way” which can only be a good thing photographically.

I hope you enjoy this image, please click on it to see a larger version.  I do have more images from the photowalk, as well as from the recent trip to Grand Falls, so please stay tuned.  If you haven’t subscribed already, please click on the subscribe link on this page to get my posts send to you automatically.
