This is harder than I thought it would be

This whole going social media dark thing is a lot harder than I thought it would be.  I can’t tell you how many times over the last few days I have reached for the Iphone to make a quick Twitter update.  It has become so “second nature” that I really took it for granted that I could just send a quite message out to the world.  When you cut yourself off from that, it really makes you feel a bit uncomfortable.

There have been a few positives though.  It really does seem like I have a lot more free time in the evenings.  I haven’t really done what I had planned on doing with that time.  I haven’t edited and processed a single image.  I haven’t gone out and shot any new images.  I have been working out in the garage on Sancha.  I have also been reading quite a bit more.  Both of those are very good things as they are things I truly do enjoy.

I am hauling Sancha’s frame to Tucson on Saturday to have the fabrication started.  I have a lot of cleaning up to do in the garage, and even though I really would like to get some images posted, I have to confess that it feels pretty nice not staring at the computer screen after I get home from work.

A “social media dark” experiment

I joined Twitter a couple years ago, and Facebook shortly after that.  Twitter has become an important part of my online life.  I use it for nearly all of my online communications, but have come to realize that it is taking more and more effort to just stay “caught up” with everything there.  It has started to feel like a chore.

I feel that I have fallen into a “rut” recently, and all of this barrage of social media is a large part of it.  With that said, I have decided to take a little vacation from social media.   For the rest of the month I am going “social media dark.”  No twitter.  No Facebook.  No Foursquare.  No GetGlue (even though I just started using it).

I will be spending my “online” time visiting a few of the forums I am part of.  I will be working on some images.  I will post new images here, but won’t be tweeting them.  If you want to see them, check back here, or subscribe to my RSS feed.  They will also be posted to my SmugMug account which is linked above.

When I return, I am going to be going though my follow list on Twitter and cleaning house, A LOT.  I will continue to follow everyone I have interaction with, but the signal to noise ratio has gotten completely out of control and I need to reign it in.  Things won’t really change on Facebook as the vast majority of people I am friends there are people I know, or knew, in real life.

After I click publish on this post, I will send it to Facebook and Twitter.  After that, I will be shutting down Tweetdeck, which runs 24/7 and deleting the social media apps from my Iphone.  I will not see replies until after the 1st of February, so if you want to comment, please do so here on the blog.

I will miss everyone, but will see you all in a little over a week.
