The Ghost’s Chair

Why is it that when you get a bunch of photogs together in one place and there is an old chair nearby, that chair becomes the center of attention?  This happened when we were up shooting at the dog track in Black Canyon City, and it happened during the recent downtown Phoenix photowalk.  I was probably the 10th person who actually captured an image of this chair.  I think it was even used in a few portraits that were taken in this alley.

This alley is actually a photographic treasure trove.  Whatever type of lighting there is gives off an eerie green hue on long exposure captures, add that to the soft focus of the Lensbaby and the first thing I thought of when I say this image after import was that it was “ghostly”.

This image is actually pretty much “out of camera” with the exception of my correcting a lot of the green out of the color balance.  Aside from that, a little sharpening and here it is.

Stairway to heaven?

Going back to the dog track for an image tonight. As for the blog post title, sorry, I simply could not resist using such a “hacky” line.

One of my previously posted images, Up On The Roof, was taken from the top of these stairs.  I am pretty sure that I was the only one in the group that day that actually ventured to the top of these.

What really grabs me about this image though is the light out in the track area beyond the grand stands.  If I remember right, this shot was taken about 30 to 45 minutes before sunset.

Who left the seat up?

It seems that the pool of images from the trip to the dog track after Christmas will never run dry.  This image is the first that I have edited and posted since doing a complete OS re-install on my primary desktop computer over this last weekend.

I really needed to boost my RAM up to 8 gigs and also upgraded my data hard drive to a 2tb HD.  Being a firm believer that Windows needs to be re-installed once a year or so, I decided that this would be the perfect time. (yes, I still live in the Windows world)

It somehow seemed appropriate to use an image of a toilet after “flushing” my last install of Windows 7 and starting with a new one. :-)

Yellow section and red seating

I thought I would head back to the dog track for an image to post tonight.  Every time I look through all the images I made that day, I keep coming back to the grand stands.  In a building that has been abandoned for such a long time, these seats are about the only thing there that still presents itself as being orderly.  Don’t get me wrong, they are filthy and many of them are broken, but they are the only thing at the track that gives you the feel that with a little TLC, they could be returned to glory.

Welcome to the snack bar

Welcome to the Black Canyon City dog track snack bar.  What can I get you?

This little corner of the dog track really jumped out at me when we were up there shooting after Christmas.  I am not sure why, but when I got home and started looking at the images it didn’t “jump” out at me.  I decided to take another look at it tonight and all of a sudden I was really liking the image again.  To be honest, the color version of it really does nothing, this image was meant to be in black and white.  I also did  a version that I cleaned the digital noise above the grill up, but came back to the “noisy” one.
